Rare Scarlet Electrical Discharge Recorded in the Atmosphere

Three photographers based in the island nation have recorded visual evidence of “red sprites”, one of the most elusive celestial events in the world, in which luminous crimson flashes manifest in the heavens.

A Remarkable Night of Discovery

This group of artists initially planned to capture the Milky Way over the distinctive clay formations in the lower part of the country on a night in October, and unexpectedly witnessed the extraordinary event.

Initially believing they would be fortunate to get good weather that evening, but their shooting session turned into “an unforgettable one,” one photographer stated.

“He was checking his images for a stellar landscape and found he had photographed scarlet atmospheric flashes,” he explained. “It was unbelievable – there was a whole bunch of screaming and shouting and all sorts going on in the dark.”

Defining Red Sprites

The scarlet phenomena are atmospheric energy releases in the upper atmosphere, produced by storm systems. Differing from conventional electrical strikes that shoots towards the surface, these events shoot upwards towards the mesospheric region, producing appearances that resemble vertical forms, root vegetables or even bell-shaped organisms. The first photograph of a red sprite was captured – by chance – in that year, by a research unit at the an educational institution.

Momentary and Otherworldly Sightings

The phenomena last for such a short time – lasting just a millisecond – that they are seldom seen to the unaided vision, but an individual was fortunate. “I happened to be looking straight toward a sprite when it took place – pure chance observing the correct area of the sky and I witnessed a short crimson illumination,” he explained.

Seeing the phenomena was a goal for the photographer, an honored nocturnal imaging specialist. “It appears as if you witness an unreal vision, it feels otherworldly … it’s this very deep red colour that is there for a split second, so it is captivating to witness.”

Advanced and Creative Mastery

Photographing a this phenomenon requires a proficiency with specialized camera skills, as well as an familiarity with atmospheric physics and innovative thinking, the individual said. “It’s a really involved category of art that’s very rewarding as well.”

A different team member remarked it was among the “most incredible evenings” of his existence. “I could see the starry river illuminating above the distant edge while these enormous red tendrils of energy danced above a electrical event hundreds of kilometres away,” he said.

A One-of-a-Kind Photographic Achievement

To his knowledge, there are no other images capturing crimson flashes and the southern hemisphere Milky Way in the same photograph.

“It represented a unique instance when you understand you’re witnessing something you are unlikely to ever witness again.”
